You complete a training session that should feel like routine. The pace is comfortable, the effort is manageable, and your fitness is objectively good. Yet the next day you feel completely drained.


Perhaps you wake up exhausted, struggle to concentrate at work, develop flu-like symptoms, or need an unexpected day off training just to recover. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

When Normal Fatigue Isn't Normal


Every training session creates stress. Recovery is the process of adapting to that stress and becoming fitter.


Normal recovery may involve:

  • Mild muscle soreness

  • Temporary tiredness

  • Reduced motivation for a few hours

  • Feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep


However, some athletes experience something different:

  • Excessive fatigue lasting 24-72 hours

  • Flu-like symptoms after exercise

  • Elevated resting heart rate

  • Reduced exercise tolerance

  • Feeling disproportionately tired compared to training load

  • Difficulty recovering between sessions

  • Recurrent illness


When this pattern persists for weeks or months, it deserves investigation.


Common Causes of Excessive Fatigue After Exercise


1. Low Energy Availability

One of the most common causes I see in endurance athletes is under-fueling. Many athletes believe they are eating enough because they are not losing weight. However, energy availability is not simply about body weight. You can maintain weight while still failing to provide adequate fuel for training, recovery, and normal physiological function.

Warning signs include:

  • Poor recovery

  • Reduced performance

  • Frequent illness

  • Low testosterone in men

  • Menstrual dysfunction in women

  • Persistent fatigue


2. Iron Deficiency

Iron plays a critical role in oxygen transport and energy production.


Even before anemia develops, low iron stores can contribute to:

  • Fatigue

  • Reduced endurance performance

  • Elevated perceived effort

  • Slower recovery


Athletes, particularly endurance athletes and female athletes, are at increased risk.


3. Thyroid Dysfunction

The thyroid regulates metabolism and energy production.


Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can affect:

  • Energy levels

  • Recovery

  • Exercise tolerance

  • Body composition


This is why thyroid markers should often be included in a comprehensive assessment.


4. Chronic Life Stress


The same body processes training stress and life stress.


High-performing professionals often underestimate the impact of:

  • Long working hours

  • Mental stress

  • Poor sleep quality

  • Family commitments


A solicitor training 20 hours per week may not respond to training in the same way as a full-time athlete with the opportunity to prioritize recovery.


5. Viral or Post-Viral Issues

Athletes sometimes develop persistent fatigue following viral infections. In some cases, symptoms can continue long after the initial illness has resolved. A careful medical history is essential when fatigue appears suddenly or follows an infection.


6. Training Load Mismatch

Sometimes the issue is not overtraining but under-recovery. Many athletes can complete hard sessions successfully but lack sufficient recovery between them.


The result is an accumulation of fatigue that eventually manifests as:

  • Reduced performance

  • Poor sleep

  • Recurrent illness

  • Excessive recovery time


What Blood Tests Should Athletes Consider?


A comprehensive blood panel may include:

  • Full Blood Count (FBC)

  • Ferritin

  • Transferrin Saturation

  • Serum Iron

  • Thyroid Function

  • Vitamin D

  • Vitamin B12

  • Folate

  • Testosterone

  • Cortisol

  • CRP

  • HbA1c

  • Fasting Insulin


These tests can help identify potential contributors to fatigue and guide a personalized nutrition and recovery strategy. This is not an exhaustive list.


Should You Stop Training?

Not necessarily.

Completely stopping exercise is rarely the first solution.


Instead, athletes often benefit from:

  • Reducing intensity temporarily

  • Improving carbohydrate availability

  • Optimizing protein intake

  • Monitoring recovery markers

  • Prioritising sleep

  • Adjusting training load based on symptoms


The correct approach depends on the underlying cause.


The Importance of Looking Beyond Blood Tests


Blood work is valuable, but it rarely tells the whole story. Two athletes can present with identical blood results while experiencing completely different recovery outcomes.


A thorough assessment should consider:

  • Training history

  • Nutrition habits

  • Recovery practices

  • Work and life stress

  • Sleep quality

  • Gastrointestinal health

  • Supplement use


Only then can a meaningful plan be developed.
